Synopsis:
Colin Walker is a lifelong member of the Scout Association and a former Chairman of Central Yorkshire Scout County. On his retirement as a Primary Headteacher in 2000, he started the well-known Scouting Milestones Website. He now writes extensively on Scouting History, Lord Baden-Powell and The Siege of Mafeking.

‘Brownsea: B-P’s Acorn’ is the story of the World’s First Scout Camp and the subsequent Scout History of the Island up to the present day, including the 1907-2007 Scout Centennial Celebrations. The author was an advisor to the Re-enactment Camp held on Brownsea exactly one hundred years after Baden-Powell first blew his Kudu horn to rouse the campers at the start of his Experimental Camp.

Whilst consulting all existing historical resources, nothing has been taken for granted and, from his own first-hand detailed research, Colin Walker has been able to discover much previously unpublished information. He challenges the accepted wisdom on the number of boys at the camp, giving exact provenance for his conclusions about the ‘mystery boy’. A brief biography of each participant is provided, with much of the information coming from relatives and friends of the ‘Brownsea Boys’ themselves. All known correspondence relating to the camp, some sent from the Island, is also detailed and every photograph thought to be taken there is illustrated.

Following extensive details of the original camp, one hundred years of somewhat surprising Scout History on Brownsea is described with accuracy and humour, shedding new light on the myths that have grown up over so many years.

B-P’s Scouting Biographer, William Hillcourt, once called for all the existing information on the Scout History of Brownsea to be compiled in one book. This is it!
