The Contrary Gardener
'Mary, Mary, quite contrary
How does your garden grew?'
'Not very well' I replied 'I seem to be all in a stew'

My runner beans don't run any more
The weeds have lumped it
And dumped it
Where the roses once grew by the door...

Poems - House on the hill. £4.00 (Inc P+P)

Poems - 'House on the Hill'
A booklet of poems many describing the landscape, including Derbyshire, the town of Pontefract and West Yorkshire.

Extract from the book...
To set the scene. In and around Pontefract, West Yorkshire hundreds of years ago Monks grew liquorice because the depth of soil required was found in the area. Over time this ceased to happen. Two liquorice works still make sweets in the town. Although a coal mine which dominated the town for many years has since closed.

Liquorice Mine
Pete said to Rose
'Come with me down to the mine
and see where the liquorice grows'
Rose looked dumbfounded but had a sweet tooth
She thought she'd get to the bottom of this
and find out the truth

Because Sir John Betjeman had said
'In the liquorice fields of Pontefract my
love and I did meet....'
Now Rose she had a liking for many a liquorice sweet
And the mines they were as black as night
Apart from the allsorts which glistened inside

So with Pete Rose went armed with bucket and spade
To dig in the mines for sweets to raid
Rose had decided that the mines were in the field
The liquorice had grown there once and made their yield
The sweeties came from the sugar mills
Perched on top of all those hills

Over the years they had fallen in to the ground
As they dug down deep they found a quarter
a half and even a pound
of coconut circles squares and blobs
You once could buy them for only a bob
Pink and yellow brown and blue
Take your pick and gather a few

She ate them 'till she felt quite sick
She eats no more not even a lick
